Feasibility of Anaerobic Co-composting Empty Fruit Bunch with Activated Sludge from Palm Oil Mill Wastes for Soil Conditioner
نویسندگان
چکیده
Utilisation of palm oil mill wastes to make soil conditioner through anaerobic co-composting is feasible and has the potential to maintain the natural resources, and to reduce the impact on environmental quality in the future. Co-composting process uses pressed-shredded-grinded empty fruit bunch (EFB) with activated sludge (AS) from the pond system of a palm oil mill as a suitable option for organic waste disposal with economic and environmental profits, since the process leads to stabilised final compost which can be used to improve and maintain soil quality, and fertility. The temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and moisture profile in the compost was analysed during the experiment. The pH and moisture values remained stable within 6.8%–9.2% and 64%– 71% throughout the process. The final matured compost was deemed stable for agricultural uses considering C/N ratio of 12.2 achieved within 100 days. The amount of nutrients and heavy metals were analysed in the final matured compost.

Co-composting of empty fruit bunches and partially treated palm oil mill effluents in pilot scale
The main objective of this study is to investigate the physicochemical changes of the cocomposting Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) with partially treated palm oil mill effluent (POME) in pilot scale. The partially treated POME from anaerobic pond was sprayed onto the shredded EFB throughout the treatment. The composting materials were turned over one to three times per week for aeration. Temperature an...
متن کاملEffect of New Palm Oil Mill Processes on the Efb and Pome Utilization
New palm oil mill processes are characterized by advanced oil separation technologies with zero dilution water (‘ECO-D’ for example as a new system for oil recovery without dilution water) and continuous sterilization of the fresh fruit bunch (FFB). These processes have a deep impact on the amount and composition of waste water (POME). Compared to conventional palm oil mills the total amount of...

Global environmental pollution challenges can be alleviated if proper disposal and conversion of wastes is promoted. An attempt of converting waste to wealth was made in this study by converting oil palm empty fruits bunch to activated carbon through chemical activation with potassium hydroxide which was used for adsorption of Rhodamine B dye from waste water. Fixed-bed column adsorption system...

Composting of Palm Oil Mill Sludge (POMS) with sawdust was conducted in natural aerated reactor. Composting using natural aerated reactor is cheap and simple. The goal of this study is to observe the potential of composting process and utilizing compost as media for growing Cymbopogun citratus, one of Malaysia herbal plant. The highest maximum temperature achieved is about 40 degrees C and to i...

Producing crude palm oil (CPO) will have side effect on producing palm oil mill effluent (POME). Besides of high COD /BOD contents, POME still contains high amount of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphor and mineral). Traditional treatment of palm oil mill effluent using facultative anaerobic method not fully eliminated COD and BOD into allowable limit. The objective of this research was to utilize p...
